The Project

Liss’s Hillier Garden Centre, set in a beautiful area of Hampshire countryside, provides gardeners with a wide array of plants, trees and tools, while also boasting an impressive oak furniture selection. Keen to be ‘green’ in more than one sense, Hillier has a long-term commitment to sustainability. Its focus in the past has been concentrated upon improving water management, but energy efficiency has also become a new mandate.

Since the Liss garden centre increasingly found its old-style fluorescent lamps provided dull lighting and required regular maintenance, it seemed like a win-win solution to upgrade the lighting and cut out a source of energy waste. Hillier chose to use ‘Save It Easy®’ in order to retain the existing light fittings and simplify the process of replacing the old lamps with energy-efficient equivalents.

Implementation

In total, 64 old-style lamps were replaced with energy-efficient T5 lamps, using Save It Easy. The installation was quickly carried out by Energys Services Ltd with little or no disruption to staff or trading. The new lamps were simply slotted into the existing fittings.

The Savings

As a result of the lighting upgrade, the garden centre has seen a 44% reduction in the amount of electricity required to power the lighting, and it is set to save £1,019 every year on its electricity costs. Hillier will also cut 4.37 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere each year.

Project Payback

The project is expected to pay for itself in just one year and four months.
